Is “…should I have done…” a correct tense? [on hold]

0

Can you please tell me if my tenses are correct in the following sentence? If so, what are the tenses I am using? Thank you!

"I was hoping to get a response before the upcoming deadline, so I could make changes should I have filled out something incorrectly."

(I wanted to get a response early so that I would be able to fix the errors in the application and submit it again before the deadline.)

  • Hi Per, welcome to EL&U. The tenses are correct, but "should I have" is less commonly used nowadays (though not incorrect) and the sentence reads somewhat awkwardly. A native speaker might say something like "I was hoping to get a response before the upcoming deadline, so that I could make changes in case I'd filled out something incorrectly."

  • The only tensed verb there is was, which is the singular past tense of be. There are no other tenses involved because everything else is a modal or a non-finite verb.

Yes, it does sound correct, like a conditional statement. At least, it doesn't sound incorrect.

Your main priority should be the deadline and fixing larger errors, unless the person whom you're submitting this to is a really strict grammarist.
