Transition to research gap after giving background information

0

In my literature review introduction, I open up my second paragraph explaining some background information on my topic. I bring up the gap in research in the 2nd paragraph.

Here is both the first, second, and third paragraph:

"In response to the current geopolitical crises plaguing the Middle East, specifically the Syrian Civil, the war in Afghanistan, and instability in Iraq, the countries of Western Europe have experienced a substantial influx of refugees. During 2015, over a million migrants crossed into Europe seeking asylum, a number unprecedented in in recent history (“Asylum Statistics” 2018). Alongside the societal, political, and humanitarian aspects, the economic impact of Europe’s migration crisis has become a growing concern. Whether refugees contribute to or deplete public budgets of developed European countries presents a key issue when evaluating the economic implications of immigration."

"By and large, research in this area overwhelmingly concludes that
immigrants bear no significant burden on public finances, finding
their net fiscal impact to be less than ±1% of a country’s total GDP
(Rowthorn’s 2008). This conclusion diverges from the current body of 1
research specifically examining refugee immigrants. While research in
this area is limited, with only a few studies having calculated the
fiscal impact of refugee immigration on public finances, the overall
trend suggests refugee immigrants represent a cost to a host country's
public sector. Moreover, even less attention has been paid to the
relationship between asylum seekers and a country’s fiscal standing.
As a result, clear information of migrant’s short-term fiscal impact
on public finances prior to receiving asylum is scarce."

The purpose of this study is to develop a static accounting framework to compute the public net cost produced by asylum seekers residing in Sweden in 2015. The Scandinavian country was chosen as a case study because it presents favorable conditions for this type of analysis. In addition to comprehensive data on immigrant’s income and welfare consumption being highly accessible, the nation has encountered a sizeable shift in asylum applicants in recent years, surpassing the typical number seen in the majority of EU countries. Apart from the region selected, the year 2015 was examined to analyze migrants at the height of the crisis.

I'm finding it difficult determining what transition to use when introducing the gap in research. Instead of "moreover," I thought of saying "additionally," but I feel like that's too abrupt.

My question is what transition can be used to introduce the new topic, which will be what I'm attempting to research. Thanks for the input :)
