Outputting tar extraction progress without --checkpoint-action or pv

I'm currently working with a very limited rootfs and kernel that is already in production (and does not have internet access), and I'm trying to output a simple tar extraction progress update, to pipe into another script. The version of tar is 1.17, so I don't have the option of using --checkpoint-action (I do however have --checkpoint, which outputs to stderr). I also don't have pv. I know how large the file is, and so can calculate the percentage completed using these checkpoints, I just can't get the number out at each checkpoint.
I'm sure there is an easy solution to this that I'm missing, any ideas would be welcome! =)
Just to be clear, I'm limited really to the tools that are already in the rootfs, I'm not able to install new ones such as pv or an newer version of tar.
