every : refering to various objects for each subject

-1

Look at this sentence:-

Every elephant saw 2 monkeys.

Is it possible that all elephants saw just 2 monkeys or there were 12 monkeys that every 2 of them were seen by an elephant? My guess is that there were 12 monkeys.

How can I justify my answer if it is true?

  • Welcome to EL&U Darvag. Your sentence is ambiguous as far as the number of monkeys is concerned. I'm afraid the question is not exactly about English Language. Not within the scope defined in the Help Center. Maybe you should try our sister site for those who are learning English

  • Every elephant saw 2 monkeys, but this gives no information about whether they were the same 2 monkeys. Suppose there were 3 elephants each with a monkey on its back. Every elephant can see two monkeys. The monkey on my back is that this question is about logic, not language, so I'm flagging it for closure as "blatantly off-topic". Darvag, you might like to read How to Ask and take the EL&U Tour. :-)

  • How in the world did you come up with the number 12? There is nothing in your sentence that warrants that math. You haven't stated how many elephants there are.
