IPA, and possibly, easily switching keyboard layouts in Arch/Manjaro

0

So, I have installed ibus-kmfl, scim, as well as the SIL IPA keyboard layout. But I cannot get them to work. That is, when I use my associated keybindings, I can switch from a UK to a US layout, which registers as a change to the SIL layout, but I cannot actually type any IPA characters.

I'm unsure how to go about rectifying this so I'll ask the simpler question of: How to best type IPA in Arch/Manjaro, short of copying and pasting? I will be using it primarily for writing XeLaTeX documents, and for taking notes (possibly in plaintext, wikitext, or something else) in preperation for writing said XeLaTeX docs.

As a corollary, is there a way to easily switch between other layouts? I.e., say, an Icelandic/Scandinavian layout for dealing with older Germanic languages, or Spanish for writing/mailing, etc.

I also still haven't figured out how to input Japanese/Chinese, but both this and the afore-going paragraph might be best treated as individual issues.

Edit: To clarify, I have tried putting other layouts that aren't there by default into ibus-kmfl, but from they Keyman site they download as kmp files, which I cannot figure out how to install myself (yet).
