Using the semicolon correctly
I am studying maths and have seen the semicolon being used frequently. I'm not sure if I'm using it correctly though. Is the semicolon to be used to separate two sentences which could be written as a single sentence? the following link is to a math question in which I've used the semicolon. Can someone please confirm whether my usage is correct or whether I should just replace it with a comma?

Welcome to EL&U. Do note that this is not a proofreading service or writers' workshop, however. The common uses of the semicolon are relatively uncontroversial: to separate independent clauses or to provide a higher level of separation between items in a complex list. I strongly encourage you to take the site tour and review the help center; feel free to edit the question if you can make it a better fit for the Stack Exchange Q&A format.
