Comma usage when “this is because” is followed by conditional

I'm wondering which of the two options below is more correct:

  1. This is because, if I do A, then B will occur.

  2. This is because if I do A, then B will occur.

In a paragraph I am writing, the sentence that comes before makes a claim and has a fairly complex structure, so I need to put the reasoning for the claim in the sentences that follow, starting with the one in question. A third sentence in the series will complete the reasoning with something like, "B will then lead to C," so I think the conditional structure in the middle sentence is necessary.

I believe that a comma is not normally used after "because" in a structure like, "This is because [simple independent clause]." However, in my sentence, the reason is a more complex conditional, and I am unsure whether in that case it becomes necessary to separate "because" and "if" with a comma.

My gut says to go with the second option, but I'm not completely confident. Both forms turned up in a quick web search.
