serial-to-UDP bridge

i have a program (Psyscope) that sends messages through a virtual serial port on one computer, and a Max patch that receives messages through UDP on a designated port 12300 on another one (two Macs connected through a local wifi).
I wanted to create a serial-to-UDP bridge with socat on the first comp like this:
socat GOPEN:/dev/ttys000,ignoreeof UDP-sendto:192.168.0.1:12300
('socat pty,link=/dev/ttys000 udp-sendto:192.168.0.1:12300' works the same way)
However, with this command i only succeed in sending messages locally, from the Psyscope program to the terminal on the first computer, while i only get to communicate to the Max patch on the other comp through from terminal (using echo).
I fail to understand why doesn't socat send messages to the port specified with the udp-sendto address type?
serial-port udp socat
