liberation and release [on hold]

-1

is there a difference between these two words? They appear as synonyms in dictionaries, which makes me wonder whether a phrase like "the ethos of liberation and release that infused the New Music" is nothing but a hendiadys - or rather a pleonasm.

Many thanks,
K.
